What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a chronic inflammation and or infection of the eyelids. Oil glands are naturally present around hair follicles (eyelashes) and eyelid margins. The secreted oil is an important component of the tear film. However, an accumulation of oil around the lashes and along the eyelids causes irritation and inflammation. Furthermore, bacteria that usually reside on the skin can migrate and mix with the oil, cause infection and further aggravate the problem.

What are the symptoms of Blepharitis?

Symptoms typically include burning, itching, stinging, sandy or gritty sensation. Excessive crusting and mattering are typically evident in the morning. Swelling and redness of the eye/eyelids and blurred vision may occur.

Who are at risk for Blepharitis and is it contagious?

People of any age can be affected by this condition. It is usually not contagious.

What are the treatment options for Blepharitis?

Treatment consists of thoroughly cleaning the eyelids along the eyelash line. Use soft cloth soaked in warm water, wring out excess water and place over closed eyes. This will soften the crust. Then cleanse the eyelid margin along the eyelash line using soft cloth, cotton tip applicator or prepackaged pads (i.e. OccuSoft). This process should be done once in the morning and once in the evening. Sometimes a none irritating liquid soap like Johnson & Johnson No More Tears TM can be used to help remove the oil. It should be diluted before soaking the cotton tip applicator or soft cloth.

This is a chronic condition and cannot be cured completely. It will often wax and wane. Sometimes antibiotic cream, drop, or pill is needed to control episodes of exacerbation. Chronic use of antibiotic is not advised.

What can I do to avoid getting Blepharitis?

There is no proven method that can prevent having this problem. Cleaning the eyelid routinely is the best way to keep this condition under control.
